Breaking Genre Rules

The Instruments of Death is many things. It has horror elements, it has mystery elements, comedic, action and fantasy elements. When I was writing, I never considered genre, I just kind of let it out. I never wanted to be trapped by the rules of genre, or set by some requirements that don’t make any sense to my story. I just wanted to tell my story. I wanted to bring these characters and their world to life.
The fun thing about the IOD is that it can be anything. It can be romance, or adventure or even both. It can be whatever I want it to be to fit in with the section of story I’m trying to convey. These genres are prisons for writers, one that I’m proud to say the IOD is free of. This works on so many levels, but not just for me as a writer, for you as a reader. I want you to pick up the next book and ask ‘what madness is he going to give us this time?’
It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve read a book, and got bored with the same old tropes, over and over again. My word! can’t we think of something new? The goal with the IOD, is to transcend that, to leave that old style behind. I want to bring you something that I hope you will enjoy, something that not only defies the norm but breaks away from it completely. To create something absolutely new, in these times is nearly impossible, it’s all been done before. Every genre, every story, every character have all bent to the invisible rules of traditional storytelling. But the IOD, as you will soon discover, kneel to no one, why should the way our story is told be any different? You know, this is a lesson in life too. Be who you are, love what you are, and never let anyone tell you any different.
